World's Most Powerful Luxury Brands

Lauren Sherman, Forbes

Louis Vuitton's current advertising campaign--starring Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards using the brand's original monogrammed steamer--is a departure from recent campaigns, in which actresses like Scarlett Johansson and Uma Thurman promoted the company's handbags.

Instead of focusing on American film stars to help sell their flash-in-the-pan looks, the company--owned by billionaire Bernard Arnault's French conglomerate Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy (LVMH)--has gone back to basics, targeting its original customer: the jet-setter. Why? In this fickle economy, it's likely more customers are looking for useful goods, not trendy bags. So, this time around, the company's pushing its 154-year-old luggage collection--and using a retirement-age rocker with a questionable past to do it.

Whether the Richards advertisements will pay off remains to be seen, but bold moves like this are what keep Louis Vuitton one step ahead of competitors. With a brand value of $25.74 million, Louis Vuitton was recently ranked the No. 1 luxury brand in the Millward Brown BrandZ ranking of the Top 100 Most Powerful Brands, a list that covers 50,000 brands worldwide.

In Depth: World's Most Powerful Luxury Brands
To rank them, market research company Millward Brown used the BrandZ database of its parent company, WPP (nasdaq: WPPGY - news - people ); the database is the world's largest repository of brand equity data, which include interviews with more than one million consumers globally. Some of brands on the list are clients of WPP's advertising agencies. Consumers were asked about their loyalty to each brand and also about their attitude toward the future of the brand (for example, whether or not its stock will increase value or its sales will increase). The BrandZ ranking also considers dollar value of a company. In 2008, Google (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people ) topped the complete list, with a brand value of $86.1 billion.

Marino Marin, a managing director at Gruppo, Levy & Co.--a New York-based investment bank specializing in retail--says it's no surprise Louis Vuitton, which began as a steamer trunks and luggage retailer in 1854 and today is the marquee brand of LVMH, ranked first.

"
Louis Vuitton transformed the luxury business as a whole," says Marin. "And there is definitely a direct correlation between their presence in the BRIC countries and their position on the list," he says, referring to the growth in the luxury markets of Brazil, Russia, India and China.

Behind The Brand
Thanks in part to sales in these regions, LVMH's fashion and accessories division, of which Louis Vuitton is a part, reported revenues of 1.5 billion euros ($2.3 billion) in the first quarter of 2008, jumping 7.1% from 1.4 billion euros ($1.9 billion) in 2007's first quarter.

Altogether, there were four
LVMH-owned companies on the list, including Champagne brand Moët & Chandon and fashion label Fendi.

Private businesses also fared well. Armani ranked No. 8, thanks in part to a licensing deal with Samsung for branded televisions. The company has also embarked on other lifestyle projects, including Armani-branded hotels, spas and restaurants. The minimalist designer, one of the world's billionaires, has kept the company private and, as a result, avoided the input of shareholders focused solely on the bottom line.

"The fact that he was never seduced by the idea of going public speaks to the value of his brand," says Marin. "There's a value in independent-mindedness."

Hermès is another such company. Although public, the family who started it still owns 29% of the shares. Some believe this personal investment is behind the brand's continued growth. In the third fiscal quarter, sales at Hermès were 415 million euros ($639 million), a 13.4% increase from the same period in 2007. Handbags are still sourced, handcrafted and assembled in France, which is why, says the company, the most basic version of the in-demand Birkin starts at $8,000. Hermès has also done well with lower-priced items. Silk scarves for $320, bracelets for $280 and beach towels for $510 are sold on the company's exclusive E-commerce Web site, www.hermes.com.

But regardless of whether they're public or private, these brands all share one common denominator: Their customers stay true.

"
Luxury brands do very well because they command high levels of emotional loyalty," says Nikhil Gharekhan, senior vice president at Millward Brown. "They ensure that the loyal customers are going to come, and, therefore, revenue stream is assured. Even in times of recession these brands don't cut costs; they continue to deliver top quality. It's almost a justification to splurge on these brands."

Do you shop at thrift stores?

from Shiny Style

The New York Times published an article this weekend on the increasing popularity of thrift stores. We're no strangers to second-hand purchases, but know that many fashionista eschew the practice. Keep reading for the Times' explanation of the trend and to throw in your two cents.

As the economy gets worse and worse, we've continually been told that designer womenswear prices are getting higher and higher and show no sign of hitting a ceiling. People keep paying whatever designers charge for everything from cashmere sweaters to handbags.

So it's interesting that the thrift store industry is growing at a rate of 5% per year at the same time. Perhaps women are turning to thrift stores for savings on some wardrobe items, which allows them to channel that savings toward more expensive designer items.

Plus let's not forget in the wake of Earth day that buying clothing from thrift and consignment stores is a way of recycling without sacrficing style. It also eases the guilt if you're not directly supporting companies that employ sweatshop labor, your money is going towards Good Will or a mom-and-pop-type retailer.

So what do you say, do you shop in thrift and consignment stores? Is there a difference between the two? Would you shop in one but not the other? Tell us in the comments below.

Italian Luxury Handbags Never Go Out of Style

By Chris Robertson

When it comes to fashion accessories, everyone knows that Italian luxury handbags are timeless. But, if you own a boutique or retail store, you may not know where to buy wholesale handbags, or have the knowledge to recognize reputable manufacturers. Here are some tips about what to look for, both in terms of fashion handbags and in terms of selecting the right supplier:

1. Skins are in. When it comes to Italian luxury handbags, look for those that are made from real python skin, real ostrich skin, and real crocodile skin. If you're concerned about price point, consider cocco-ligator skin, a process whereby natural crocodile fibers are used to create a skin similar to that of a crocodile, but is less expensive than crocodile leather.

2. Remember the color story. This year, the color story is all over the spectrum - literally. Vibrant reds continue to make a statement, while green is emerging as the must-have color of the year. Perhaps due to the influence of the environmental movement, women are selecting clothing and fashion accessories that reflect this eco-friendly color. The other two colors that are emerging as frontrunners this season are purple and olive, while gold and silver are catching the limelight for eveningwear accessories. Of course, black never goes out of style, but embellishments are being added to more traditional black fashion handbags.

3. Look for the artisanal touch. The best Italian luxury handbags are handmade by artisans who have years of experience in crafting timeless pieces. The manufacturer you choose to work with should acknowledge the traditions associated with Italian craftsmanship, and the production process should involve a collective effort to bring out the finest qualities in the materials used. When it does, you will have the opportunity to purchase unique wholesale handbags that your customers will treasure.

4. Watch the paperwork. If you live outside of the European Union and you purchase genuine Italian luxury handbags made from exotic skins, there is an entire body of regulations governing their export. The manufacturer that you choose should be able to meticulously carry out the requirements for exporting these leather goods. For example, the manufacturer needs to track the origin of the skins, obtain the necessary licenses, and complete the proper CITES paperwork in order to ship the finished products to you.

5. Variety is key. Although you know your customer better than anyone, the chances are good that she has different needs for different occasions. Carrying a variety of clutches, purses, and tote bags helps build customer loyalty and repeat sales. The best manufacturers of Italian luxury handbags will give you the choices that you - and your customers - need. For example, you should be able to choose the styles of bags you want, as well as from among four different varieties of exotic skins and more than 30 different tonalities. When you do, your customers can find exactly what they need to match their wardrobes and lifestyles.

For Many, Thrift Shops Are a Wardrobe Essential

from The New York Times

SHEENA MASSIE, dragged by her mother to garage and estate sales as a child, once cringed at the sight of used goods. “The very thought of being caught by my peers buying other people’s junk was mortifying,” said Ms. Massie, a 25-year-old waitress in Canal Winchester, Ohio, near Columbus. “If someone else didn’t want it, why would I?” But, like Ms. Massie, who with her mother is opening a thrift shop, more consumers are concluding that brand new is not necessarily better.

According to the National Association of Resale and Thrift Shops, the industry is growing at a rate of 5 percent a year. And as the prices of gasoline and groceries edge higher and debt — be it mortgage or credit card — weighs more heavily, saving money on clothes, shoes and household goods has become increasingly essential for many people. “With the economy in its current condition, I think people will begin turning to more thrifty ways of shopping,” said Ms. Massie, whose store, Thrift on the Canal, opens next month. “We want everyone that shops with us to enjoy the same thrill we do when we go thrifting.”

The thrift shop association estimates that there are 25,000 such stores in the United States. Britt Beemer, the founder and chief executive of America’s Research Group, a consumer behavior research firm, said surveys have found that 16 to 18 percent of Americans shop in thrift stores, while 12 to 15 percent visit consignment stores. “Thrift shops are not on the radar screen for many shoppers,” Mr. Beemer said. He predicted that more would turn to them, especially for back-to-school clothing.

Kara Lake, a 34-year-old mother in Braintree, Vt., who is home-schooling her five children, ages 8, 7, 6, 3 and 6 months, said she was one of those fans, particularly since a tight budget is normal. She said she grew up in rural Vermont wearing thrift shop clothing and “can count on two hands when I’ve bought something new.” Because many families have only one or two children, she said, the clothing is only gently used. “We can still give our kids the best things.” Ms. Lake said she easily found clothes with labels like Old Navy, the Gap and Banana Republic. “It doesn’t make any sense to me to buy anything brand new if the clothes are well taken care of.”

She also finds clothes for herself from midpriced labels like Ann Taylor and J. Jill, shopping twice a month and spending, in all, $15 to $20 for an armful of clothing for herself and several of her children. Consignment shops, which typically have higher prices but offer higher-end or designer merchandise, have their fans as well. Clothing must be washed or dry cleaned before sale, and the selection in such shops tends to be more carefully edited.

Mason Bechtel, a retired administrative assistant for a major financial services firm in Houston, grew up choosing between having several new dresses each season from Loehmann’s, a discount store, or just one from Bonwit Teller. “I realized that shopping at the best shops, I felt stupid,” she said. “Why pay $120 for a dress I could find in a resale shop?”

Ms. Bechtel, whose mother ran a Lilly Pulitzer shop in Westport, Conn., admits to having expensive, if classic taste. “I still wear the same clothes from the same shops — but I usually pay nothing more than $20.” Thrift and consignment shoppers love getting a bargain. For Ms. Bechtel, it was a $25 Black Watch plaid blazer with a black velvet collar and $25 for a St. John knit suit — new, typically costing four figures. Julie Gold, a co-owner of TheThriftShopper.com, said buying used clothing takes more diligence than simply rifling the racks at a local retailer. “In a thrift store, you really have to dig,” she said. “It takes a lot of time, energy and patience.”

But, thrift shoppers say, the time demanded is repaid with single-digit price tags and a wide variety of styles in one place. Two national chains, Buffalo Exchange and Crossroads Trading Company, allow shoppers to bring in clothes they no longer want for cash or to trade for clothes in the store. Both promote their fashionable offerings, in an attempt to appeal to younger shoppers. And both offer a combination of new and what they term “recycled” clothes.

“A lot of the neighborhood men who shop in our store are very style-conscious,” said Mary Dalton, the manager of a Crossroads store near the Castro district in San Francisco. “They can recycle their clothing and not wear it into the ground. Sustainable businesses are becoming more trendy, so people are more open to it.”

Prices, she said, range from $6 to $75, and popular jeans like Diesel or G Star cost $50 to $65 a pair compared with a regular retail price that can be double or triple that. “People will get three or four garments for the price of one,” she said. “We get all kinds of customers, from an attorney who needs work clothes to the college-age hipster. The age range is very, very wide.”

Consumers can also make money by selling or donating clothing or household goods to thrift and consignment shops. Donations can offer a tax deduction, while selling items that are worth more than you paid, can make consigning lucrative, Ms. Massie said. “I once found a vintage Carlton Ware money box for $2.50 and made a $45 profit and a pair of Ruehl jeans for $9.99 that I sold for $60. I know of a lady who bought a necklace for $3.50, and it was a diamond over one carat worth over $8,000.

“That’s why I shop in thrift stores.”

A Handbag Repair Specialist for Purse Restoration

Vintage BOTTEGA VENETA designer handbag -
EXCELLENT CONDITION

from newhandbagstore

Do you have a favorite handbag or tote that has seen you through plenty of occasions but just needs a bit of a facelift? A handbag repair specialist can handle everything from cosmetic cleaning and repair to serious restoration of a number of different materials from cotton and leather to nylon and other animal hides.

A handbag repair specialist is a good call, especially if your purse is worth a great deal of money or the work to restore an antique is too meticulous to handle on your own. Be sure to seek a professional through references from other people or research a few possibilities through the local Chamber of Commerce.

Cleaning your Bag

Cleaning a hand bag or purse must be performed by hand by a skilled artisan who is trained in a variety of materials like suede and leather as well as a whole host of other possibilities. The best place to look for a handbag repair specialist, especially if it is leather, is a local shoe repair company.

The person restoring your handbag to its original glory should be well-versed in a variety of materials as well as how to clean them. Stain removal, cleaning the lining by hand as well as the hardware and straps and even a dye job if necessary should be in all a day’s work for a handbag repair specialist. Indeed, steam cleaning and even stain protectant should be part of the cleaning process for purses and other bags.

Restoring your Bag

There are occasions where it would be necessary to enlist the help of a handbag repair specialist to do a complete restoration on a purse or other bag. If you have a leather purse, perhaps the stitching is loose or completely undone or maybe you have scratches on it. A handbag repair specialist is also trained to replace the hardware of the purse or bag as necessary like zippers, clasps, button enclosures, snaps and more.

Occasionally a handbag repair specialist is called upon for intricate detailing work such as replacing the crystals on an antique purse or sequins on an evening clutch. Of course, because this work is more meticulous and time consuming, expect the fees of the handbag repair specialist to be higher than a simple cleaning.

All in all, a handbag repair specialist can bring new life to a tired old handbag or purse, something you probably could not do on your own. Once you do have your bag fixed, you want to take extra precautions in terms of storage to ensure that it stays in prime condition. The most important piece of advice a handbag repair specialist can give is to place the purse or bag in a fabric breathable container rather than plastic so that it has some breathing room while still being protected by dust and moisture.
