Korean Co-Owners Find Consignment Concept Appeals to Immigrant Community, but They Made an Explanatory Tutorial Just in Case

He Sook Kooritzky's work as a real estate agent often takes her to Annandale. Now the Vienna resident and Korean immigrant has another reason to head there. A recently opened, high-end consignment shop on Little River Turnpike has sold her on a new concept: selling the designer clothes that cluttered her closet and buying those cast off by others.

"Whenever I'm in Annandale, I stop by," said Kooritzky, 66, who recently scored Roberto Cavalli blouses for herself and Christian Dior sunglasses for her daughter at the shop, called Grace & Kelli. "I am a very good customer."

Annandale, the original hub of the Washington region's large Korean population, is home to plenty of restaurants and shops that have introduced residents to Korean foods and products. Now, in a nondescript strip mall, a trio of Korean Americans has opened Grace & Kelli with hopes of hooking their community on resale by offering the designer clothing they say Koreans covet.

Several such stores exist in the region, but they are unfamiliar to many Korean immigrants, particularly those of the first generation, said co-owner Gina Kim.

"Koreans are big consumers. They're into name brands, luxury brands," said Kim, 40, an Annandale lawyer who emigrated from Korea at age 11, was a self-described "consignment queen" in college and now finds herself explaining the concept to Korean women of her mother's era. "A lot of them think I made up this whole idea."

The store, which opened in February, feels more boutique than thrift shop. Its walls are painted fuchsia, its floors are polished wood and its racks hold beaded and silken clothing -- all women's, except for a few children's items and men's neckties -- whose labels read Prada, Chanel and St. John, the classic line marketed by Angelina Jolie.

Prices are a fraction of those at the department stores from which most of the garments originated. Not that they're cheap. One recent afternoon, a bronze, patent leather Louis Vuitton handbag glimmered on a lighted wall shelf. Its price: $1,300, probably two-thirds the original cost. Mid-range brands, such as Ann Taylor, were priced as low as $20.

Kim said the idea has caught on more quickly than she expected. Sure, some skeptical Korean customers have asked whether they can enter through the back door or shop after hours because they feel ashamed to be shopping for used clothing. But the store's inventory has grown from 200 pieces to more than 1,000. And Kim, who funded the project with $120,000, said she has broken even each month since opening.

Designer purses have been flying off the shelves especially fast, she said: "I can't keep a Chanel handbag." The resale industry is growing about 5 percent each year, and sales are rising as the economy slows, according to the National Association of Resale and Thrift Shops. But Kim and her co-owners -- her mother, Sue Kim, and sister-in-law, Hannah Yun -- said they started Grace & Kelli more for fun than profit.

The idea grew out of Gina Kim's monthly gatherings with a group of close girlfriends, avid shoppers who lamented that the spoils of their habit, particularly those designer handbags, were taking over their closets. Someone suggested they rent a hotel ballroom to sell their surplus and donate 20 percent of the profit to charity.

That never happened, but it got Kim thinking. She owned vacant retail space at Little River Turnpike and Annandale Road. Why not try a store? She figured it could be a place for Koreans and non-Koreans to shop together, raise some money for charity and tighten the bonds between herself, her mother and Yun.

"It became a little pet project," Kim said. Grace & Kelli, so named in a nod to glamour icon Grace Kelly, started with garments collected at a "consignment party" thrown for friends and also from Vienna resident Evelyn Stephens, an acquaintance who runs an online business called Runway Clothes Consignment. Advertisements in Korean-language newspapers helped draw initial crowds, Kim said, as did a 7 1/2 -minute consignment tutorial given by Yun on a local Korean-language radio station. Yun, an insurance agent, had run a recycling campaign for the YWCA in Korea, so she explained consignment in "save-the-environment" terms. At Grace & Kelli, consigners usually reap about 50 to 70 percent of the price the garment or bag sells for, Kim said.

The owners plan to donate 10 percent of their eventual profit to the Korean Community Service Center in Annandale and a second charity that is not tied to the Korean community. This month, the store will also give two $1,000 scholarships to Annandale High School graduates who show a commitment to volunteering, Kim said. The store has become something of a ladies' gathering spot. On a recent day, Kim, her mother, Stephens, Yun and clerk Jennifer Yun gathered around a sleek glass table to the rear of the store to nibble Korean sweets and sip coffee. It's a common sight, Kim said.

"It's just like a local hangout," said Sue Yi, a Rockville pharmacist and Grace & Kelli regular. "You see other people come in and try things on, and you get motivated to go and browse yourself. It's fun, and the whole idea is just really being received well." Not least by Kim's mother, Sue Kim, whom Kim described as a "typical first-generation Korean woman." She wears jeans and sneakers to her day job as owner of a food court restaurant in downtown Washington. But after work, Kim said, "it's only Chanel."

Now on four afternoons a week, Sue Kim, 65, goes from her job at the food court to Grace & Kelli, where she works as a clerk. And she's a client: She has picked up Versace sneakers and Chanel shoes at the shop.

"I think it's no more," she said of buying full-price clothing. "I'm so happy." Kim said she hopes to persuade buses carrying Korean tourists to stop by the store. She figures the visitors -- who often shop for designer goods in the United States, where they're cheaper than in Korea -- will snatch up inventory.

For now, though, she and her co-owners said they are happy to see the store attract a mix of Korean Americans and people they refer to as from "the mainstream community." Tina Swallow, 44, is one of the second group. She moved to Annandale from Rhode Island recently, started a career in technology and figured it was time to edit her wardrobe. She said she dropped off about 100 garments at Grace & Kelli in February and felt like she'd "lost 20 pounds." Swallow, who retired from a globetrotting career in the Navy, said she felt even better when the store sent her a $350 check a few weeks later.

Among the items Swallow let go was a red St. John suit she had worn each Christmas for the past 10 years in various corners of the world. "I wore it at Christmas in the Middle East and in Japan," Swallow said. "Hopefully somebody else will enjoy it as much as I did."

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday that is observed on the last Monday of May (observed in 2008 on May 26). It was formerly known as Decoration Day. This holiday commemorates U.S. men and women who have died in military service to their country. It began first to honor Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War. After World War I, it was expanded to include those who died in any war or military action. One of the longest standing traditions is the running of the Indianapolis 500, which has been held in conjunction with Memorial Day since 1911. It is also traditionally viewed as the beginning of summer by many, for many schools are dismissed around Memorial Day.

Many people observe this holiday by visiting cemeteries and memorials. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3 p.m. US Eastern time. Another tradition is to fly the U.S. flag at half-staff from dawn until noon local time. Volunteers place a U.S. flag upon each gravesite located in a National Cemetery.

Many politicians and community leaders give speeches at community gatherings on Memorial Day.In addition to remembrance, Memorial Day is also a time for picnics, family gatherings, and sporting events. Some Americans also view Memorial Day as the unofficial beginning of summer and Labor Day as the unofficial end of the season. The national Click it or ticket campaign ramps up beginning Memorial Day weekend, noting the beginning of the most dangerous season for auto accidents and other safety related incidents. The USAF "101 Critical days of summer" begin on this day as well. Some Americans use Memorial Day to also honor any family members who have died, not just servicemen.

No doubt, this has contributed a lot to the general public's nonchalant observance of Memorial Day."

Following the end of the Civil War, many communities set aside a day to mark the end of the war or as a memorial to those who had died. Some of the places creating an early memorial day include Charleston, South Carolina; Boalsburg, Pennsylvania; Richmond, Virginia; Carbondale, Illinois; Columbus, Mississippi; many communities in Vermont; and some two dozen other cities and towns. These observances eventually coalesced around Decoration Day, honoring the Union dead, and the several Confederate Memorial Days.

"You bet I'm goin' to be a soldier, too, like my Uncle David, when I grow up."According to Professor David Blight of the Yale University History Department, the first memorial day was observed in 1865 by liberated slaves at the historic race track in Charleston. The site was a former Confederate prison camp as well as a mass grave for Union soldiers who had died while captive. A parade with thousands of freed blacks and Union soldiers was followed by patriotic singing and a picnic.

The official birthplace of Memorial Day is Waterloo, New York. The village was credited with being the birthplace because it observed the day on May 5, 1866, and each year thereafter, and because it is likely that the friendship of General John Murray, a distinguished citizen of Waterloo, and General John A. Logan, who led the call for the day to be observed each year and helped spread the event nationwide, was a key factor in its growth.

General Logan had been impressed by the way the South honored their dead with a special day and decided the Union needed a similar day. Reportedly, Logan said that it was most fitting; that the ancients, especially the Greeks, had honored their dead, particularly their heroes, by chaplets of laurel and flowers, and that he intended to issue an order designating a day for decorating the grave of every soldier in the land, and if he could he would have made it a holiday.

Logan had been the principal speaker in a citywide memorial observation on April 29, 1866, at a cemetery in Carbondale, Illinois, an event that likely gave him the idea to make it a national holiday. On May 5, 1868, in his capacity as commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, a veterans' organization, Logan issued a proclamation that "Decoration Day" be observed nationwide. It was observed for the first time on May 30 of the same year; the date was chosen because it was not the anniversary of a battle. The tombs of fallen Union soldiers were decorated in remembrance of this day.

Many of the states of the U.S. South refused to celebrate Decoration Day, due to lingering hostility towards the Union Army and also because there were very few veterans of the Union Army who lived in the South. A notable exception was Columbus, Mississippi, which on April 25, 1866 at its Decoration Day commemorated both the Union and Confederate casualties buried in its cemetery.

The alternative name of "Memorial Day" was first used in 1882, but did not become more common until after World War II, and was not declared the official name by Federal law until 1967 . On June 28, 1968, the United States Congress passed the Uniform Holidays Bill, which moved three holidays from their traditional dates to a specified Monday in order to create a convenient three-day weekend and for the first time recognized Columbus Day as a federal holiday. The holidays included Washington's Birthday (which evolved into Presidents' Day), Veterans Day, and Memorial Day. The change moved Memorial Day from its traditional May 30 date to the last Monday in May. The law took effect at the federal level in 1971 . After some initial confusion and unwillingness to comply at the state level, all fifty states adopted the measure within a few years, although Veterans Day was eventually changed back to its traditional date. Ironically, most corporate businesses no longer close on Columbus Day or Veterans Day, and an increasing number are staying open on President's Day as well. The holiday has endured as one where most businesses stay closed because it marks the beginning of the "summer vacation season" (similar to neighboring Canada's Victoria Day, which occurs on the prior Monday).

Louis Vuitton's current advertising campaign--starring Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards using the brand's original monogrammed steamer--is a departure from recent campaigns, in which actresses like Scarlett Johansson and Uma Thurman promoted the company's handbags.

Instead of focusing on American film stars to help sell their flash-in-the-pan looks, the company--owned by billionaire Bernard Arnault's French conglomerate Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy (LVMH)--has gone back to basics, targeting its original customer: the jet-setter. Why? In this fickle economy, it's likely more customers are looking for useful goods, not trendy bags. So, this time around, the company's pushing its 154-year-old luggage collection--and using a retirement-age rocker with a questionable past to do it.

Whether the Richards advertisements will pay off remains to be seen, but bold moves like this are what keep Louis Vuitton one step ahead of competitors. With a brand value of $25.74 million, Louis Vuitton was recently ranked the No. 1 luxury brand in the Millward Brown BrandZ ranking of the Top 100 Most Powerful Brands, a list that covers 50,000 brands worldwide.

To rank them, market research company Millward Brown used the BrandZ database of its parent company, WPP (nasdaq: WPPGY - news - people ); the database is the world's largest repository of brand equity data, which include interviews with more than one million consumers globally. Some of brands on the list are clients of WPP's advertising agencies. Consumers were asked about their loyalty to each brand and also about their attitude toward the future of the brand (for example, whether or not its stock will increase value or its sales will increase). The BrandZ ranking also considers dollar value of a company. In 2008, Google (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people ) topped the complete list, with a brand value of $86.1 billion.

Marino Marin, a managing director at Gruppo, Levy & Co.--a New York-based investment bank specializing in retail--says it's no surprise Louis Vuitton, which began as a steamer trunks and luggage retailer in 1854 and today is the marquee brand of LVMH, ranked first.

"Louis Vuitton transformed the luxury business as a whole," says Marin. "And there is definitely a direct correlation between their presence in the BRIC countries and their position on the list," he says, referring to the growth in the luxury markets of Brazil, Russia, India and China.

Behind The Brand
Thanks in part to sales in these regions, LVMH's fashion and accessories division, of which Louis Vuitton is a part, reported revenues of 1.5 billion euros ($2.3 billion) in the first quarter of 2008, jumping 7.1% from 1.4 billion euros ($1.9 billion) in 2007's first quarter.

Altogether, there were four LVMH-owned companies on the list, including Champagne brand Moët & Chandon and fashion label Fendi.

Private businesses also fared well. Armani ranked No. 8, thanks in part to a licensing deal with Samsung for branded televisions. The company has also embarked on other lifestyle projects, including Armani-branded hotels, spas and restaurants. The minimalist designer, one of the world's billionaires, has kept the company private and, as a result, avoided the input of shareholders focused solely on the bottom line.

"The fact that he was never seduced by the idea of going public speaks to the value of his brand," says Marin. "There's a value in independent-mindedness."

Hermès is another such company. Although public, the family who started it still owns 29% of the shares. Some believe this personal investment is behind the brand's continued growth. In the third fiscal quarter, sales at Hermès were 415 million euros ($639 million), a 13.4% increase from the same period in 2007. Handbags are still sourced, handcrafted and assembled in France, which is why, says the company, the most basic version of the in-demand Birkin starts at $8,000. Hermès has also done well with lower-priced items. Silk scarves for $320, bracelets for $280 and beach towels for $510 are sold on the company's exclusive E-commerce Web site, www.hermes.com.

But regardless of whether they're public or private, these brands all share one common denominator: Their customers stay true.

"Luxury brands do very well because they command high levels of emotional loyalty," says Nikhil Gharekhan, senior vice president at Millward Brown. "They ensure that the loyal customers are going to come, and, therefore, revenue stream is assured. Even in times of recession these brands don't cut costs; they continue to deliver top quality. It's almost a justification to splurge on these brands."

The New York Times published an article this weekend on the increasing popularity of thrift stores. We're no strangers to second-hand purchases, but know that many fashionista eschew the practice. Keep reading for the Times' explanation of the trend and to throw in your two cents.

As the economy gets worse and worse, we've continually been told that designer womenswear prices are getting higher and higher and show no sign of hitting a ceiling. People keep paying whatever designers charge for everything from cashmere sweaters to handbags.

So it's interesting that the thrift store industry is growing at a rate of 5% per year at the same time. Perhaps women are turning to thrift stores for savings on some wardrobe items, which allows them to channel that savings toward more expensive designer items.

Plus let's not forget in the wake of Earth day that buying clothing from thrift and consignment stores is a way of recycling without sacrficing style. It also eases the guilt if you're not directly supporting companies that employ sweatshop labor, your money is going towards Good Will or a mom-and-pop-type retailer.
